So water changes only occur every 48 hours? I’m keeping my betta in a jar with 30 oz similar to the instructions, but I don’t want to have him sit in what could be high amounts of ammonia. Would dosing Seachem prime in between the 48 hr water changes be helpful?

Hi Bella, I’m not the OP but seems like we’re both doing this protocol at the same time. How is your fish doing?

I would google whether Prime interacts poorly with Epsom or kannaplex. Mixing chemicals can have unexpected results sometimes.

Nitrates etc will largely depend on how much your fish is eating - if they aren’t eating/pooping the water will be stable for longer.

Is it supposed to be 1/2 a spoon of Kanaplex added per 30 oz of water? Or just total?

When you say add another 1/2 tablespoon after 24 hours, do you mean 1/2 per 30 ounces again? So after 24 hours I should have 2 tablespoons of salt in a half gallon of water? Just want to clarify, thank you

Hi! I am going to start treatment on my betta soon but I was wondering, is it better to do the tanning option with no blue? I know it might not work as well but I really don’t wanna stress him as he’s from a tanning rich tank. And if I were to add tannins, how much should it be? Like should I make a normal amount of extract? Or just a small amount? I’m not sure if it’s supposed to be potent amount of tannins or not

That's my question also Lelia . I only used half a spoon until I hear her answer. I don't want to overdose my poor sick betta

Thank you for this. I’m going all in on your method - Kanaplex is going to take at least 3 days to arrive here in the UK but I’ve started the Epsom salts and he’s tolerating that well. I’ve also made diy antibiotic food, but right now he’s not interested in eating.

He’s young, type 1, stage 2 by your classification so I’m fighting for him. Wish us luck 🤞🏻❤️

Checking in on day 3 for anyone reading this in the future - I know I’ve been searching for people’s experiences with this technique online (tip: search Reddit for ‘dropsy + substack’ to find a few).

My fish has now progressed to stage 4 with severe pine coning. He does not move unless startled, and refuses to eat. My hopes are low.

However, I am committed to giving this protocol a chance to work, and it is early days still - only day 3 for Epsom salts, and day 2 for added kannaplex at it took 24 hours to procure. I will review my plans at the 5 day mark, if he makes it that long.

Grateful to have this post to cling to!

One doubt i do have is to the effectiveness of Epsom salt in equalising osmotic pressure. I’ve certainly come across this reference a great deal in fish keeping communities etc, and even in discussions about human wellness, but in humans it seems fairly disproven to have any impact, and in fish I could only find scientific papers detailing its impact as a laxative and muscle relaxant.

While I understand osmosis and how salinity impacts on this in theory, I suppose my question is to whether the body of a fish is permeable to this process simply by immersion. I have not really found a satisfactory answer to that.

But if this truly is a mechanism, even a minor one, this protocol seems more likely to work than others by merit of the greater concentration and duration of Epsom exposure.

So I’m in. Just sharing my thoughts & doubts for anyone else overthinking this at some point in the future!

Wish me and Feta luck! 🤞🏻❤️💕

This treatment has a good success rate, as mentioned a younger/ previously healthy betta will have greater success rates! I wish you the best of luck!
